1971 AM Muscle Car 2n1 in IBL
Description: As described in the title the car model is a 1971 AM Muscle Car 2n1 from DAZ which cost about a tenna. I used the uffizi_probe.hdr for both a background and a light source with a quality setting of 512 in Bryce6.1. A bit of ambience was used on the ground to give it the same tint under the car as the inner shadows of the building. A second light was used to pick out a bit of the bump and specularity to blend the ground with the most distant part of the backdrop on the left. Yet another light was used under the ground (which has had its shadow casting capabilities disabled) to light the underside of the car slightly at the front. The render took about 25 minutes to complete, however, dispite the seeminly simple elements used I spent over four hours fiddling with the lighting set up and generally tweaking the ground mat. Things that I tried and abandoned... Fuzzy ground material - helped blending with background - increased render time horrendusly. DOF effect - helped blending with bacground - increased render time horrendusly. Additional light sources in addition to the additions... unable to get the colour balance right and the ground ended up looking more like what it really is, a cube that has been aligned with the bacground to hide the "photograpic" image of the "real" ground. Known issues... the paintwork is not the correct colour for a car of this age (if it were OE). There are one or two ugly refections which show up the angularity of the model in parts. Shadow banding is evident. I'm not very happy with the way the vinals turned out on the rear quater of the car. The ground is not very ground like but that was the best match I could make for the backdrop, groundier ground I could do, but it ceased to blend with the backdrop at that point. Things that I like best. The louvers on the rear window and the hood shaker are to me the most convincing in terms of realism.

great

You did a great job working that .hdri into the scene that way. In the description you detailed your process and the considerations to juggled and I must say I agree with all of the choices you've made. The image could be better as you well know, but in this case it was more fun than"work." Also, it doesn't take much before render times become as you said, horrendous. I really like the blue color, even if it isn't period enough. So far so real.

I think this image is as good as it can get. But if you made or make an HDRI image yourself from photos you can use the HDRI to light up the scene and the photo as the background. That way you get the light and the sharpness of the background.

Thanks for the detailed description, David. If you transform the probe to spherical, you could properly tonemap it to 8 bits per colour, than cut out the street and use it as material for the cube. That's just theory, of course, but something you might want to try. It might help with the colour. Superb job anyway!

Gat - I do not completely agree. The Uffici probe is the best one Debevec has on its website. It is the only one in which I couldn't detect a flaw. It is 1600 pixels in diameter and is still crisp when transformed to 2560 x 1280 spherical. The column near the front of the car has almost exactly the same size as in the transformation. It looks blurred here because Bryce 6.1 does not correctly tone-map the HDRI for proper backdrop use. BTW, Bryce 6.1 stops to load a probe with about 6'500 pixels diameter.
