Some Pebbles
Description: Another render conbination of IBL "bith-am1900.hdr" probe made by Horo and standard bryce sunlight. The pebbles (of which there is a few 100) were duplicated using the "fade mirror" trick - I shaded the square of mirrored pebbles from the sun with a giant sphere off camera to avoid the direction of the lighting showing up the mirror overly - there is some direct overhead light from the sky, but given the position of that it was considered unlikely to show up the mirrors. Postwork was some gamma compression to bring the brightness down a tad. I did try a version with smaller pebbles, but somehow the image lost a lot of it's character. So even if this seem like boulders, this is the version I liked best.

Very evenly distributed light, which appears very plausible for that kind of weather - sky and clouds. Nevertheless, beneath the pebbles (or boulders) there is darkness. I can't remember having seen this subtle detail so clearly on any of the works shown here. Again, this hybrid lighting using sun and IBL gives a very pleasing effect. Could be a painting, hard to believe it's made with Bryce.

.

I think IBL did a really good job for this one, everything is evenly lit, with the clouds like that thats the way it should look. very nice!
What do you mean by a sphere?

Sphere...

Thanks. er... sphere = ball... just something to shade the pebbles from the direct sunlight - if the sun hit the pebbles at an angle you'd see where the mirrors were. If you look carefully you can still make them out because the test card image casts strongly coloured light - however there are enough distributed simulated lightsources for these coloured lights to add up to grey - but in doing so provide a very pleasent and natural ambient light as opposed to the sterile and uniform light provided by an even dome of white lights.
