The Dark Side of Bryce
The Dark Side of Bryce

The Dark Side of Bryce
Description: Now I'm playing with the "color" of shape. The trick was to show how the objects could be defined only by their shape and shadow, not by a texture or by any serious lighting interventions. Just pure white environment (excluding the clouds) and pitch black of "what's-happening" in this environment. Having this trick in mind, I tried to create someting like a child's painting (concerning the unnaturally straight walls of the house) but combined with an almost lethal dosage of loneliness and abandonment. "Abandoned" - that is how I named it when I started the unfinished project several months ago. I think I finished it now.

Every tree/vine in scene is bryce-made except the one where my halloween pumpkin is hanging from. 3dcafe.com I think was where I got the tree from along with the broken cart and 3dplant.com for the grass. The rest is my modeling. The only postwork is the blur on the nearest vine.

You've managed to get a very 2 dimensional feel. Your strict compliance to pure black and pure white create a stunning contrast. Yes, we can infer the nature of objects quite sufficiently from just their silhouettes. This is helped by your careful placement of objects. It kind of feels a little Spy vs Spy to me and I really like that. Very clever and the clouds turned out great.

Yes, it's finished. I checked ?Abandoned? and as far as the baclground and the sky are concerned, the fog lifted. I still don't get a very positive mood from it, but it is less depressing than the first version. It is very important that we experiment with Bryce, doing the less obvious with it. Also in this department, you did a great job. You know what? You could even fax it. 2 colours and all is shown. 5/5 for idea and finish from me.

This is a very interesting way using Bryce, reminds me somehow of the Hitchcock dream sequence in Spellbound. I particularly like the inversion of the white plant against the black house. Excellently weird. Full marks.

Thank you guys, for the remarks! Before posting this img I wasn't really sure how it will affect the viewer. Or at least entirely sure. A gibbet in the back and a small broken bike in front, yes, you couldn't get a positive mood from it. Perhaps I achieved my goal here. Rashad, thanks for mentioning the clouds. I struggled there a few hours to get them right for the pic. A friendly opinion is always welcome and will keep me experiment.
