Candles
Description: The boot-house is from DAZ3D, the candles selfmade with cylinders and metaballs. The flames are a combination of two different volume materials and the halo is another volumetric material - all of them from David. The scene is lit by the candles alone, just a small radial light above the boot. Rendered with soft shadows.

With this house and stables of Santa Claus I wish you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy new year.

Nice!

I think this scene is wonderful. It reminds me of the fairytale of the little old lady who lived in a shoe. I have always loved fantasy pieces. I'm not very good at them though. Your lighting is just right. Thankyou for your help on my pieces. I really appreciate all the help I can get.

great

Tina is right about the lighting. I love the metaball work for the dripping candles. Daz has done a great job once again with the shoe model and the rough textures. I love the color choices. The stars is the sky are a nice touch.

There was an old lady who lived in a shoe. She had so many children she did not know what to do... and then my memory fails me. What is the rest of the fable and who was it written by?

Anyhow great work Horo. The soft shadows are a very nice addition. How long did it take to render the scene?

Time to render

21 minutes with hard shadows, 15 hours 15 minutes with the soft ones for my regular 1600 x 1200 size on a 2 x 3.2 GHz Pentium D. Who's complaining IBL takes a lot of time to render?

Thanks for your comments!

The lighting is indeed amazing. Just looking at this img makes me feel warm. Wise choice to make those candles the main source of light. It just seems a little unnatural the candles to melt the same way like each other. With the metaballs there, you could've used different lattices to negative-cut the candles. A minor qualm though. My attention is on the candle flames which are actually very good looking. The ground is what completes this img and "gathers" everything in one place. Slightly reflective, bumpy... I wonder if the gound is a terrain or a plane. Horo, I see your render as a cover in a Christmas Fairy-tale book. Very good!

The lighting is excellent, I think the candle flames are a bit iffy, possibly a question of the scale of the mat as opposed to the colour, intensity or effect. Balanced composition and a good example of how to use and "explain" multiple lightsources. And it looks even better printed out!
