The Ministry of Clones
The Ministry of Clones

The Ministry of Clones
Description: Many many lights. All of them cast shadows but there is a mixture of types, spots and point sources with varying colours and rates of decay. The set is built inside a DAZ model called The Ministry (hence the title) and a couple of Vickies were employed (clones) inside a collection of Bryce primitives, clynders and torusus... utilising Polished Iron and a version of Frosted Mirror. I modified the floor slightly to have some bump information and made it a bit reflective. Vicky is clad in hi-rez textures, carefully placed obstructions and lighting prevent her from being too "exposed". I contemplated if the vickies should be identical or not... but decided not to let it worry me since I was mostly involved with setting up the lighting. No postwork. The artist behind "The Ministry" is Stonemason, and having had chance to sample a few of his models, I have to say that they are very well put together.

daz model

This is a very detailed piece of work David. That daz model is out of this world. Daz really outdid themselves with this one. The construction of the model is superb, and the aged textures are trully stunning. It's nice to know one can donwload models of entire rooms that are detailed like this. The pipes, walls, and everything else is so well done!

I love the Vickies. Very alien feeling. The lighting is outstanding. Yes, in an indoor scene like this your secondaries will at times need shadows and falloffs. As I mentioned in the other scene by Tina, the more open the sky in the scene, the more likely you will want secondaries that do not cast shadows. See Vacation Photo 23 for another example of where ranges and shadows secondaries won't work. Because it's outdoors with an open sky, I used no falloff and no shadows. It all depends on the amount of open sky.

The color saturation of those lights almost gives the scene an IBL feel. Good work.

No wonder Vicky lost her smile from ?Shower of light for Victoria? in such an environment. The contrast of the desolation of this Ministry to the cleanness of the containers is most striking and very effective. The light is simply outstanding. The DAZ model is a very good start for an indoor and usually steals the show. The accomplishment here that prompts me to give you a fiver is the light and the colour composition. There is uglyness in the Ministry and beauty in the ?phone boots? and their content -- which is again an abomination. This makes it outstanding.

Strange combination

I look at this one and see a perfectly clean marble tile floor and perfectly clean cloning tanks set in an old boiler room environment. This is an awesome piece of work but somehow the two diametrically opposed qualities of new and old seem to clash. Is it just me or does anyone else feel this way?

Yes I do. I was trying to achieve the same kind of technology "clash" that you find in films like the matrix, they have flying ships yet they can't knit sweaters... I suppose it's a form of steam punk? Also League of Extraordinary Gentleman, but that had a more victoran feel. The concept was to give the impression of something covert taking place by putting what is clearly space age technology in a "laundry room" setting. Well, that was the idea anyhow... Perhaps the closest comparison is the X-files... where the goverment tended to be setting up space age laboratires inside old warehouse buildings. Something like that. Clearly I have not pulled off the effect, otherwise I would not have had to explain. Feel free to dock me a point.

Oh Ok. I understand where you wanted to go with this. Still, that shiney marble floor....it seems out of place in that basement boiler room setting. I think concrete or a steel grate floor would fit better.

Don't mind me. I'm just feeling like a bit of a critic lately. ;-) This IS an awesome piece of work! It has a New York City subway storeroom feel to it.

By the way, how did you do those mats on the pipes and walls? They're super realistic. I love them!

I have to accept the blame for making the floor shiny. That was more an artistic choice than a conceptual one. As for the mats on the pipes, the credit for those belongs to Stonemason, "The Ministry" is the everthing except the lights and the tanks and vicki - it comes as a single piece. I found it by accident at DAZ and waited till I had some vouchers to spend. I like all the interconnecting pipework, reminds me of some parts of HL and HL2.

So many lights you said -- and so very effective. There is really something going on there, in this room. I'd say X-files, David, as you mentioned. Someone was trying to hide a bizarre experiment we are now observing. "He" was forced to do everything quickly and that's why he menaged to clean-up only the shiny floor that Spektyr pointed out. But the room itself stays old, disused, hopefully forgotten.

Very realistic, I love the concept of this image. I think though, those containers need to make an impression that something "alive" is happening inside. Vickies are just great, but with some bubbles, a cable or two entangled in their feet, I'll know that They ARE really there. Nevertheless a superb image.
