Red Moon hdr.
Red Moon hdr.

Red Moon hdr.
Description: Horo, unintentionally I suspect, set me this challenge. He stated <> with respect to his red moon hdr - you may gather. And I thought, hmn... well, what can be done with a red moon? - tricky... so here is an answer. The idea was mostly to play with the IBL, the models are from DAZ. The terrains and ground that are visible, do not cast shadows, there is another ground plane out of sight under the ground that is set to let through some light from the rest of the hdr under the horizon, this is intended to simulated light which has been scattered after hitting the lightly coloured packed sand which acts as the landing pad for the helicopters. Beacuse the aircraft cast a significant shadow, eliptical spheres were placed under them to stop too much light underlighting them directly through the floor. The ground had to be quite green to compensate for the redness of the hdr ambient light. The sun is white and a secondary yellowish lightsrouce has been slipped in to pick up the specularity in the helicopter materals (as IBL does not stimulate specular response to any significant degree). Also, to give the sun an extra "burned out" appearnce I added a plane of "glass" between the mountains and the helicopters, it has altitude sensitive bump to add a heat haze effect and also specularity (yellow) which flares between the sun and the camera giving it a bight fuzzy halo that polutes the sky with a diffuse golden haze. Render time was about eight hours, minimum quality on hdr, 100 intensity and 15 effect. The biggest issue that I am aware of, is that the shadows of the helicopers formed by the hdr appear green tinted - but otherwise the ground would have had to be pink. Also probably there is some rule about helicopters of that design not being allowed to be that colour... I wouldn't know.

interesting

This notion of disabling shadows of floor covering models in order to allow the .hdr to illuminate the scene from below is a very important concept. I feel that the hills in the background would look much different if they casted shadows, at least self shadows. I wish there was a way to have both effects.

I also like the technique of the glass in between the copters and the mountains to add that heat wave effect.

I feel that the tail end of the copter on the right is unnatrually bright. Is this from the .hdr?

Anyway these sorts of experiments are very valuable to us all. Thanks for this.

Spectacular!

I am so impressed by your work. My son liked this one too! Where did you get the helicopters from?

Good, I can feel the heat. Very interesting techinique with the "glass". This trully provides a sun which burns everything on its way, literally. Nice helicopters you got there, but landed in a dangerous distance. With those long propellers I'll say the heli's are more lethal then the sun is :) Red Moon used, so perhaps pink-reddish color on the helicopters is inevitable as a result. Why don't you try more metallic mat on them, like the Polished Iron for ex.? With low bump and diffusion it might work better... just a suggestion. The color will show in a more dramatic nuance. I could be wrong though, I still haven't used the Red Moon yet.

It appears that I've inadvertently thrown a gauntlet your way. You asked for colour tinted hdri and I wondered what use a red one could have. With your excellent use you show us some important facts about IBL. As I've concluded earlier, IBL is not limitted to using nice room or outdoor panoramas but works very well with ?abstract? pictures if you don't use the hdri as backdrop. The colour created by the IB light works somehow similar to negative light - at least in that respect as to create false colour shadows. This may be exploited or must be counteracted. You did a cool job in counteracting it here.

I was surprised that the red one was used here - I thought it was the amber one. The concept of partly transparent underground and shades where shadows should appear is a sound one, as is proved here. Also, the glass between the choppers and the mountains to create a blasting sun with a wide halo is an interesting idea and evidently a very effective one. Another lighting trick.

The whole picture here with the description how it was made is almost a tutorial about hybrid lit scenes (Bryce sun, IBL, additional lights). With this experiment you show that IBL can be used for more than what it was initially designed for.

Still finding my way...

There are many experiments I would like to perform with the IBL. Which is a good thing to have something to look forwards to. However, the time consuming nature of the render and the rather sluggish response of B6.0 is holding me in check. I will try other materials, but I have to balance my processor time with performing less exciting tests designed to show up issues withing the system itself.

Oh... the helicopter models came from DAZ.
