Frosted Haematite
Frosted Haematite

Frosted Haematite
Description: Here, as the title reads, I used three modified versions of the Frosted Mirror mat by David Brinnen and my Haematite mat, original files available for d-load in the material section. The main goal was to continue the testing of *.hdr-s (in this case Galileo probe) and how would the probe affect an liquid-like environment. I imagined the liquid more like mercury, less like water. The frosted mat on the "splash" has 10pts. for Bump Height and a Voronoi noise with 0 octaves. When rendered with Fine AA 64rays/pixel (as here) the bump cannot be seen clearly or can't be seen at all. Note that the higher the rays/pixel raises, the blurry the Voronoi gets. This combined with the 100% transparency, reflection, refraction gives the appearance of a smooth liquid metal, possibly a mercury. The case with the wavy surface is the same, only here the reflection was lowered to ~ 56pts. instead of 100. The ball is 2 layered sphere where the outer has a Diamond mat with 300pts for refraction (not default 255) and the inner sphere has a Haematite, unchanged. The background consist of 2 planes put one in front another in distance 0.1 bryce units. The first plane is the 3rd ver of the frosted mirror used here, the back plane is an Apophysis render that I made for Pandora's Tears awhile ago. Below is a link that will help you "visualize" a bit more the options tweaked. IBL is 25/27/26

WOW!

I really like this. What an imagination you must have to create such work! I have difficulties in abstract designs. The flow is like mercury. Very nicely done.

Outstanding! A fiver from me, too. How could this be improved upon?

splendid

Yup, beautiful and realistic. I feel that mercury is easier to produce than water with an IBL. How would you go about making it look like water if you wanted it to? I feel like water might be impossible to produce in this kind of situation. Please fill me in.

I don't know that it can be inproved upon. 5/5. Sumptuous materials, excellent and restrained use of colour. Balanced composition. Yes, perhaps mercury is easier... or maybe not, mercury will - I suspect - be swifter to render if not easier. To make it look like water, TIR + increased render depth and a refractive index close to that of standard glass. Add to that IBL and it could take six months to render... seriously... it is a possibility, if the splash component is made using metaspheres, then a very real posibility since those a slow to render with transparency anyway. I would like to see this image remixed with a predominatly blue hdr just as an experiment to see how the blue and the browns of the Apophysis render combined in the reflective materials.

Thanks for the comments! The image took 2h18mins to render as you see it. The "splash" and the "wavy surface" are 3D obj-s. I tried to apply a water-like mat (diamond actually), but due to the strong refraction of the material and the many window lights Galileo's probe provides, there were very obvious artifacts within the splash making it look almost with no defined shape (bad!). So I'll keep working on this. David, I don't seem to have a blue-light hdr, all I have are the Devebec's probes. Maybe the Soda Hall or the Campus probe will work best because of its green. But it's not blue :( If you have some "blues" would you mind sharing them?
