Yet more light
Description: As the previous images in this series with minor modifications. The single light source which was the sun I replaced with ten dimmer lights in a halo to soften the shadows cast by this source. The tiled ground and the terrain under it now no longer cast shadows, this allowed the hdr to light the underside of the arches and inside the room which contains the camera. However, to subdue this effect, since it was a bit excessive the under lighting - an infinte plane was placed under the ground that was only semi transparent - this allowed precise control over the ammount of light arriving through the floor to light inside and under. Furthermore, a cube of solid material was placed under the room containing the camera to limit this effect in this area so it did not compete with the effect of the lightsource placed where the light falls from the window.

Previously the render was taking eight and a half hours to complete. The addition of the fountain (another DAZ model - the water effect created using terrains with erosion) added a least another day to this time. IBL + transparent materials = long render.

Finally I discovered I had too much light when I examined the finished render and gamma compressed the image in PSP to bring back some of the deeper shadows.

Once agian, this employes Horo's moon hdr for the purpose of the "fill in lighting".

Great job! Your techniques seem to be very effective, and thank you for the detailed explaination. I will use this approach.

I too love that fountain and have a scene in the works featuring it. The water looks great although from experience I know that you should dampen the terrains so that the water falls "down" and not "out" as much as it does here. It's a minor quibble. Is it possible for you to soften the other shadows like those of the long wall?

The soft shadows work perfectly in this case due to the resolution. The banding actually works to your benefit.

Ah - the fountain. When I suggested such at the beginning of this series, I saw it more to the left. But it looks quite nice where it is. The fountain is too small for me to notice any water ?falling out? instead of down. My eyes aren't probably what they once were - one of the benefits of age. Your lighting setup is very cunning and effective. I'm always amazed at the witty of your ideas.

If I softened the shadows further I would loose the trellis effect on the light shineing through the window - which being the focus of the image I was reluctant to do. So that is my reasoning not to go for softer shadows. Given the radical slow down brought about by the water it really discourages me from using IBL in conjunction with any large ammount of transparent material. Leaves included, which is a pity since I think that it would be a most effective combination.

Horo, I did initially try the fountain on the left, but could not find a position I was happy with. But there is where I first envisioned it!

You've accomplished it! The shadows, the atmosphere, a fountain. The water there looks so much real. A true oriental fairy-tale. There's no change on the ground material btw. Maybe it can't be edited, the bump I mean? Anyway, thumbs up! I do like it as it is now.

Thanks!

Well... I didn't want to overcook the ground mat bump since it is not very high resolution texture pushing it too far made it look a bit weird. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
