Late Night By the Pool
Description: Another reason I like the idea of ambient free materials is that I can create scenes of great complexity and re-set the lighting dramatically without needing to go back and re-adjust ambient levels to match the new lighting conditions.

In the daytime version I had not placed all of the lamps. I assumed there would not have been others visible. It turns out that there on the right is a lamp that needs to be there as in this night scene I had to be accurate with the light's position.

Soft shadows were an impossibility. Rigging soft shadows from one direction is nightmare enough and as there are 14 lights around the pool you can imagine the processing power it would require. Oh well.

Amazing! The pool light comes out absolutely real. The water is even better than in the daylight scene. I understand that soft shadows would be prohibitive, what could probably enhance the level of reality is reducing the contrast of the shadows just a little bit. I have quibbles about the strong shadows on the walls of the houses, I'm not sure where they come from. The cloud could be that bright if the full moon was behind it, but then, only one side of the cloud should be bright. I only now see the man under the lamp on the far side of the pool and the one in the room above. This is a very detailed piece of work and even though you ?only? added a lamp and changed the lighting, this one earnes a fiver as well. Outstanding picture.

thanks Horo

You always seem to be thinking along the lines I am. Again the issues you mentioned were the exact ones I struggled with. As I said above there are 14 lights around the pool casting tons of shadows in every direction. Most of the shadows would not touch the house and would decay completely if these were soft shadows. But as they are hard, these shadows originate far away but appear closer to the house than they should.

The water is the same as I use in every scene. It is the water mat I included in True Reality.br5. This water mat is one of my true pride and joys in that it is always perfect. From above, from below..perfect! It is as close to real water as anything I have ever seen in bryce. I have found no other water mat that looks this "wet", a testament to the transparency, refraction, and low diffussion value. The bump is what makes this water so lifelike, as water has breaks that are always the same be it in the amazon river or in a pool. I'm a bif time physics person, so I feel that once you solve for water, you should not need to keep solving for it. Water is water in nature unless the water is effected by somethign specific. This is the same water I suggessted you apply and tweak to your pleasure for the Fort scene as the water in that scene is close to us but the diffusion of the mat you used makes the water look solid, and not really "wet." I have always felt that diffussion in water makes water appear solid, like ice instead of a wet liquid. I also always use volume water planes or cubes of water. Why, because I feel I can take advantage of the internal refraction. I never limit myself to just a surface plane, as in physics water always has "depth." Again Thanks!

The lit water looks fantastic! And I too like this better than the daylit scene. The only changes I would impliment is to try to give sky more depth and to add visible lightsources to the scene in the form of glowing lamp, this would help "explain" the shadow situation. I would try intense pools of light and deep shadows, to give it a more nighttime look. But then the scene might look a little too chilly for laying out on a sun lounger?

sky

Yes. In both versions the sky had this flatness due to the viewing angle and zoom. The zoom was set to display the unusual letter H shape of the pool. The price was paid in the viewing angle of the sky. I wanted the image to be slightly wider than tall so I chose to cut off a bit of sky since the sky wans't my major point here.

Another example of where greater cloud height would be more realistic, but this height is already set at 90. Yes there's a litttle bit higher that I could go, but the effect is minimal. A much higher starting height from within the program is what's needed.

NICE!

I love all the detail. It must have taken you quite a while to do this. David is right about the water. I would love to take a dip in it right now! Very nice!
