Guts
Description: The Lumpy Spiral is out of the Bryce 6.0 objects library. IBL lit scene (25/25/70). The light probe was made in Bryce, using one setup that is shown on this site. Can you point it out?

It's a bit organic and when viewed on my cheap laptop screen it looks rather bloody, hence the name; after all, we all have guts, have we not?

The slight shadow banding is intentional, the Q setting was set deliberately low. It renders in under 6 hours.

There are some intersting and curious things going on here. First of all... did you deliberately leave the object unsmoothed? Then what is happening with the material surface? The faces pointing up look unbumped and mirror-like, those facing down seem bumpy. I suspect that those facing down are reflecting this surface from somewhere else... but where then? The ground looks unbumped and quite smoothe.

Oh yes, it does look very like something horribly organic that should never see the light of day. The shadow banding is not very noticable. The hdr... looks familiar certianly... I think it is a view inside something made of glass... fire and ice... something like that?

You hit it, David: IceFire's the one. After all, it's inside your c(l)ogwheel.

The object cannot be further smoothed, I've tried that. The material is simple: A copy of the same object was placed just 0.03 BU lower and high frequency sand was added for bump. I liked the way smooth, round and angular components came together.

hmm

I get the feeling of intestines maybe? I like this idea. I think though that you could improve on it very easily.

First, I wouls scrap this model and recreate it using metaballs, this way you have perfect smootheness. Second, I would look into the eyeball model that comes with the bryce5 content cd. It has an eye and a eyewhite that is veiny and very fleshy. I don't know how you felt about the organic burning skin and brains in the Halloween entry I made Piece of Mind, but that fleshy texture is tweaked and employed to insert some serious yuck into that image. This image could be more 'effective" if you wanted it to. As is the idea is suggested snough. My ideas are only for taking it further and more literally.

Aye, your c(l)logwheel image turned out very well as I recall... think that could be one to retry in IBL, see how the specularity response can be changed to give a similar feel with respect to the black metalic material used.

Rashad - to be honest, it's a quickie. I wanted to see whether that light probe could be put to some use (had a deadline to meet) and didn't want to use the torus knot again. I see what you mean, how this could be made to something really "disgusting".

David - indeed, Clogwheel could be a candidate. It's lit by light rings already, so why not use a light probe? Probably quite challenging to get the specularity effect.
