Two Objects
Description: Well, in fact, there are four, counting ground plane and camera as well. I was after the Specularity which does not work in a purely IBL lit setup anymore. The torus knot has essentially Richter's Haematite material (which so much depends on Specularity), with zero diffusion, a lot of reflection and a bit of sand texture. The ground plane has the same material, the Diffusion channel was set halfway up and the bump of the sand was halved. The sphere has my Calm Water material (featured in the Material Xchange here). The setup is uniquely lit by IBL.

Excellent surface effect on the knot, I feel I could reach into this picuture and pluck it out of the screen. The bumpyness of the surface makes it hard to appreciate if it is indeed behaving as a specular material or as a reflective one. Although, with what little I know about the technicallities of the situation, it's kinda a hazy area anyway. The other object looks like glass with a layer of condensation on it - almost. I'd be curious to hear which probe you used and what settings you employed with the IBL.

really cool

As David says the material on the torus knot is very realistic.

Thank you for this experiment in IBL and specularity. Reflection made to look like specularity only functions with a bump mapping, as without bump the reflection would be flatter and obvious as a true reflection.

Embarrassing

The whole point of this entry was to brag about the HDRI I made all by myself and I've forgotten to mention it. Oh my - that's ridiculous.

Rashad. You're right, absolutely. That was exactly my theory I wanted to ?prove?. I've uploaded another one with less bump and the difference is obvious. However, it is too early to draw firm conclusions.

Very interesting results combining the Haematite and the sand texture. The bump on the trefoil looks just great. It is the light that brings things level-up. Job well done with that HDRI. I very much like the reflected bumpiness around the main object on the sphere. As Rashad once said - the chosen materials interacting with one another more and more, are making everything seem more real. May I ask what software did you use, Horo, to make this *.hdr file? 10x
