IBL
Description: This is not strictly speaking a Bryce5, but it is Bryce... Bryce 6.0 I have seen there has been some interest in HDR lighting with a few of the people who submitt images to this site and have been wanting to say something about it myself, but have had to bite my tongue until now since it was all very secret. But now, if you visit www.DAZ3D.com you will find you can pick yourself up a copy of Bryce6.0 for $6 - if you are a Plaitinum club member. Or so it says on their site. About that side of things I don't know very much but I will say this, Bryce6.0 has something known as IBL (Image Based Lighting) this allows the user to import a .hdr Light Probe (imagine a dome of lights based on an environment which can, if you so desire, be rendered as a backdrop) and this and all bryce's usual lights and sky can all be incorporated together to create a good lighting effect. In this example, I've utilised a .hdr of St. Pauls aquired from http://www.debevec.org/Probes/ (this site will also explain a bit about .hdr to those that want to know the details) and rendered this in a simple scene with a few spheres mapped with a pen and ink doodle of my own invention. I hope you will agree that the lighting does add something of an "edge" to the Bryce render and that the time spent repeatedly testing the software has not been wasted.

looks great.

Glad to hear from you again. I for one have missed your presence and I'm glad to know you'll be around more often to give us feedback and ideas, as well as to share your amazing art.

Bravo! Bryce6 is finally here. HDR here we come!

No doubt the hdr seems to work very well in this situation. I am curious about how it works in say an outdoor scene. Shiny reflective balls have always been a strength of Bryce, so it is excellent to see this go to the next step. Does this in any way help the issue of sun light intensity we discussed before?

Well, Bryce5.com is now outdated, so what happens now? Is this the end?

The image is beautiful- nice reflections on the balls. Is the image on the balls the board from "Necnomancer's Game Board", or is it the floor (and your previous forum avatar) from "Cantrip"?

Very odd... I'm using this same St.Peter's probe as IBL for a Vue image I'm working on right now.

Perhaps my computer isn't downloading everything fully, but the image seems either over-compressed or not anti-aliased. It would be the kind of thing my computer would do, though.

I'll see when I can pick up a copy of Bryce 6, though I'm not platinum club. Any major changes of the program we should know about?

Shiny Balls: the generic test of all renderers... But yes indeed is does or will (more of that shortly) solve the issue over the not too bright sun and can provide more light under certain circumstances than you will need.

I'll upload and outdoor scene next.

Necromancers Gameboard - well spotted!

The compression you are spotting is probably coming from the IBL background itself - here is the thing, the field of view of the camera is probably about 60 degrees mostly and the .hdr has to cover 360 x 180 degrees - so in order to have a high rez backdrop you need a very high rez .hdr which is not only difficult to find but also a bit combersome to work in.

Changes... well, the hyperthreading that was implimented and then finally ditched in 5.5 is back in for 6.0. This is a double edged feature, it will speed render time, but also hog processor resources so you might need to get your hands dirty in the Task Manager if you want to do more than one render at once. There's the IBL which is set to expand further in the .1 release. The IBL shows a lot of promise and is moderately swift, certainly swifter than using light domes, which was painfully slow, but choices of material and settings of course as ever make a big difference. The Libuaries have been made more user friendly. A boolian conversion feature has been added that allows the export of boolians formed within bryce. Also boolians converted in this fashion now show correctly in the wireframe so putting an end to some confusion. Some irritating bugs have been finally nailed... but swings and roundabouts, new features always have their "quirks". It's difficult to be particularly objective, I've been looking at this for the past eight months and for half of that time the features have been pretty much broken - such is the nature of testing. A few things that will help but if I had to say what was the key feature that 6 has and 5 does not it would be the IBL because it changes the whole "feel" of the renders.

I see what Lito observed about the non-AA look of it. I think it comes from the rather bright tiny lights on the highly reflective material used. In fact, when I saw this picture first, I wondered how David could upload a render without AA.

As for the news in Bryce 6, I would like to add that the Libraries are updated as well and the content can be a organized much more easily - even the Sky Lib accepts multiple sub-libraries, something I very much missed in v.5.5. And the terain editor now works on 16 bit terrains, resulting in much smoother terrains.

Though we expected much more during those 8 months, being realistic and fair, I must say v.6 is a major upgrade and worth a try. Many issues were addressed that are hidden from the user but are essential for the smooth running of Bryce anyway.

No, Lito, bryce5.com is not outdated. Just don't relate the ?5? to the Bryce version. Anything else will do. Hey Nightst4r, just carry on!

Rather irritated...

Bryce 6 is for Power Macintosh only. No Intel support! That means I'll be running 6 on my aging and full-to-the-brim windows laptop. Or, perhaps I'll wait and see if there's an Intel Mac version support... any news on that?

I'll purchase it eventually, but right now $100 seems a bit steep for no Intel support, better libraries, IBL, and... a green interface? I'm not so fond of that. Can you customize it?

Customize

No Lito, it cannot be customized - and you're not alone disliking the green interface. I didn't realize the Mac version had no Intel support.

My fault for the lack of AA... I figured it after a bit of research... when I scaled the pic in PSP8 I had the size filter set wrongly... Ooop... I was using the lack of AA to create chequerboard patterns from procedural chevrons to be used as a hightmap and forgot to turn it back. d'oh
