Global Lighting
Description: I know the picture is small so first off I will say Im sorry. Im not completely familliar with the program as I just purchased it. I must say though the rendering, lighting, and modeling possibilties are amazing, that picture that you see above is a 4 minut render and we all well know that this same picture would be near impossible to recreate in Bryce5(.5) and if it were possible the render would take days. I would reccomend Carrara to anyone who wants to take a step above bryce, although the step is quite large. Carrara can be spendy but it is well worth it. There are some many unique features its amazing. On another note I will say that the Program is definatly not for beginners so people that want to take some time to learn the prgram is a plus, Its definatly A beast :)

This is my second render on this program I think It looks pretty neat. I want to make sure its clear that my goal here is not to bash bryce. Its just that bryce even though it has its complexities, It is mainly a starter program.

Thankyou for your time. Post back Im curious to read what you have to say

beautiful

Excellent picture. Very realistic. An artist using Bryce indeed would need true wizardry in lighting to achieve these effects, although it probably could be done. You seem to be doing well with the program for being such a newcomer so maybe it's not as hard to learn as many might think. Isn't it nice to have true GI? Bouncing light. Carrara indeed is looking good and I was begging for someone to post some Carrara works so this in nice to see. thanks.

just good render

This picture you can find it in carrara 5 like many others examples, even you can change the texture if you want, but try to made some picture not just render the examples, if you don?t know the carrara because is hard to use it try in bryce, is more easy.

Hey jesuis, caperh got you there ;-) Well, I don't know Carrera but I guess it is as much more difficult to use as Hexagon is more complicated to use than Wings3D.

You gained quite some experience in lighting scenes with light domes in Bryce, jesuis. I'm sure you'll be able to reproduce this picture in Bryce and it would look as great as this one.

light domes

I agree with Horo in that a light dome would do alot for a bryce version. But if I'm correct, light domes give softened shadows only. Also light domes ruin specularity because the specularity channel responds adversely to multiple light sources. Also, to smooth out the shadows requires 60 lights or more! Then there is the idea of the secondary bouncing light or "GI". As far as I know light domes provide appropriate primary soft light, but they don't provide secondary light from other directions, which is needed to mimic Global Illumination. So far I have heard no one other than myself mentioning that the ambient channel is unreliable for realistic shadow corrections, so jesuis may not have ever explored the more realistic lighting options that Richter, myself, and maybe others have found in bryce to replace the ambient channel and mimic more accuratly GI.

Kill the ambient channel and use secondary light sources in bryce, and you can reproduce 90% of the Global Illumination effect we see in Carrara. It's not a perfect substitute, but it will take your bryce work to a level you did not think was possible.

I've been begging Daz for GI in the new Bryce6, as the "true ambience" button is total crap and not worth the extra time. To me, GI is the only power Carrara has that makes me jealous that bryce can't do it. There won't be Gi in version 6, although there will be hdri. Hopefully version 6.6 or 7 will have true GI.

:)

I totally forgot to mention that in my introduction to the picture, Just so Its clear I did not model or design this picture I simly rendered it in carrar to show off the lighting capabilties. I am attracted to pictures with amazing lighting they catch my eye, as Im sure they do for everyone else. Thankyou for the tips rash, I will try to implicate them. I didnt even know they were moving on to a bryce 6 or 7 I will have to try that out when it arrives. Any guess as to when ?

global lighting

I have a simple set-up I use for GI, and I will e-mail it to you later on today. Try it.
I perhaps will make a bryce GI tutorial, if you think it's a useful set up. You will hear from me soon. Later.

I like it

This is a very beautiful picture. For someone with hardly any knowledge of the program, you certainly understand it's capailities. Very nice!

A little over a year after the initial comments I stand corrected. Light domes are indeed the way to go if you can afford the processing time. Light domes are the best equivalent to GI bryce offers aside from IBL. IBl is a light dome in the first place so it further proves that light domes are the best approach. If you are using a low speed machine by todays standards then light domes are very tedious and time consuming. The fact still remians that domes are the most realistic. Best case is to use as many lights as you think you can stomach. Perhaps a dome of only 20 lights each light set to a different color and intensity to create the sense of an environment would do for most scenarios.
