Heather's Final Nightmare?
Heather's Final Nightmare?

Heather's Final Nightmare?
Description: Krueger: Tell me again that you fear for their lives, and I will not destroy you.

Heather: No! This can't be.... it was you, not the pumkin that burned down the house killing my family last Halloween night...

Krueger: ...Tell me again that you fear for their lives and I will not destroy you!

Heather: Not this time Krueger! You tricked me last time into answering your questions and choosing between myself and my family. I remember dreaming of a strange man and that the house was on fire and that my family was dying. The dream was real! The next morning when I opened my bedroom door the entire house was incinerated to the ground except for my bedroom which was completely untouched by any sign of fire. You tricked me and killed my family.

Krueger: You made the choice little miss Heather. Don't be surprised! You've always been a selfish little girl, or so your mommy used to say before you let her die. So sad, no? Let me feel your fear.

Heather: I've been institutionalized for a year ever since. I've been ridden with guilt, hatred...

Krueger: ...and fear...

Heather: ...No, not fear! You're strong right now Freddie, even capable of time travel. You appear before me half man and half fire. In the institution I've learned from other kids and I know your secret. How did your face get that way? I know that you and I share a common fear, a fear of FIRE.

Krueger: No!! Who told you that? You're not supposed to know.

Heather: This is my nightmare! This time I control this dream. I command that this fire cease to consume my home and my family and consume you instead Freddie.
That's right! May this fire take you back where you came from!

Krueger: No!!!
(Fire rises from his abdomen and consumes him fully. Freddie Dies)

(Heather awakens the next morning back in her bedroom a year earlier. She opens the door of ther room to a home that is complete and unharmed. Her mother is in the kitchen making breakfast. Heather is relieved and emotional, and confused, but happy. All seems fine except...well...there's charred grass in the front yard where Freddie stood.)

SWEET DREAMS!

Pre-production PSP7. Some elements modeled in trueSpace4. Rendered in Bryce5.5. Very very minimal post production psp7. Thanks Davidbrinnen for the fire plasma. This image would not have been possible without your material preset.

What a story, I mean, is it from the real movie? It was a long time ago so I don't remember exactly. Used to be a big fan of Freddie Krueger as a little kid. You know, those old video tapes, the creeps they give when you watch them at night...
Anyway, as Nighst4r said - a great start! Very well built scene. True, David's plasma is one of the most realistic fire mats I've worked with. Will there be more renders from you to post in the contest section? Nevertheless - I'm impressed once again!

and we're off......

I got kicked out of the site 3 times as I tried to post this response! What's going on? Anyhow

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm glad to be the first to post an entry and kick off the contest. I hope this entry makes people excited. I hope that other's have time to conceive and execute clever Halloween ideas before the deadline of 10/31 that is very quickly approaching.

Thanks for reading the story. It is not from a movie. I am a playwrite so I used some dramatic writing skills to explain the image. The story I think is necessary in order to undertand that the light streaming from the bedroom is Heather's bedroom as she dreams in real time, also the meaning of the pumpkin. It has a movie feel to it but it's impossible to suggest an entire movie in a single still image, hence, the storyline.

This piece provided a few noteworthy technical challenges. First was modeling Freddie's "glove", and second was a seamless progression from Freddie's body from the fire. The integration was done completely in Bryce5.5 using metaballs and other tricks. It was not done in photoshop as most would assume. No airbrushing, just raytracing! The house was easy as it is a variation of the white house used in Afternoon By The Pool.

In hindsight the characters need a more specific connection between them. They should face each other more. The interface between bryce and DAZStudio is okay at times and awful at other times. I ran out of patience going back and forth between them losing material assignments and positions every single time! I have no "morph packages? yet, so I cannot edit the facial expressions effectively. Actual facial expressions would clarify the emotional stakes and would help viewers to care more about the characters and their states of mind. Also, I have tons of fire but no smoke. The smoke was ommitted purposefully, though I think the piece would benefit from smoke and charred effects.

I am scraping the bottom of my brain for a more fun Halloween themed image for the contest, so yes, expect more from me in this category soon. Thanks for the feedback which seems to be hard to come by nowadays. Where is everybody?

I'm still around and visiting here on a daily basis. I'm a bit busy and there's not much time for creating something. Be assured, Bryce is always on my mind.

This is an awsome piece of work you show us here. The picture fits the play - and/or vice versa. The fire is very good, excellent at some places (upper floor at left and around Kruger) but I think you made similar errors with David's material as I've done earlier, upper floor at right and left of Kruger. Finding the right object to put the plasma on is a challenge.

You said it yourself - the characters don't face each other. However, we can stretch it a bit and say Heather is worried enough to look at the blazing house. Kruger, feeling guilty, explaining to no one in particular that none of this is his fault, she wanted it that way. I also experience problems with DAZ|Studio. Sometimes it works smoothly, sometimes it gets stuck for several seconds. I haven't got the hang of it yet.

standing by me...

Thank you Horo, I'm glad to hear you are never far away. In general, your comments are VERY VERY APPRECIATED. You are very skillful. It shows in your work and in your comments.

There are hundreds of members of this site, many of them very talented, but most of them don't submit comments at all, or if they do it's once every other blue moon. Are they afraid to draw attention to themselves? Are they afraid others will disagree with them? Is it the "say something nice or nothing at all syndrome?" There are lots of great works on this site, is it really that hard to find something nice to say? Artists need SUPPORT for their hard work. They grow from feedback given by others. Afraid to share ideas, ridiculous! It's an opinion, come on! I often find the comments different people make to be very useful and I wish more would share their opinions because so far only a handful of people respond regularly, and many of them I haven't heard from in months. I don't always agree with what is said, but I'm still glad it was said in the first place. But, whatever right? To each his own.

Yes, the fire is great but has it's caveats, in that it is volumetric and therefore betrays the shape of it's owner mesh. If you apply this procedural to more complex shapes like a stone, terrain, or other complex models, the material often interacts with it's own mesh, making fracture lines and outlining the complex mesh even more. I've always wished volumetric mats would take on complex shapes, like one-piece tornado funnel models, but they don't. Perhaps David can give a suggestion or two, but he is another who I haven't heard from for a while. Maybe he's busy helping Daz fix the bugs with Bryce6 due out soon, but we need him here too. More people need to respond to images in order to keep the forum a forum for all, not just a couple commenting factions with hundreds of silent partners.

I like it!

Krueger use to scare the "S" out of me when I was younger.

Excellent choice for the contest, looking forward to seeing your other submissions.

Great work!
