Lost souls
Description: Manufactured from bryce trees, mostly. Normal lighting and one additional light source. Been working on a lot of bryce landscapes recently and made this by way of relief from the challange of realism. DOF effect employed. About five hours to render.

Hard to believe they are made of trees, angular as they are. These figures look to me like gnomes. The ?eye? actually bulges - at least that's the illusion I get. Reading the title of the work, I must say, you hit the target. Amazing idea.

I agree with Horo as far as the trees are concerned. You've made a very mechanical looking thing out of somewhat organic objects. As the image is an abstract, it's hard to judge it. Personally, I am missing the connection between the souls and their being lost. I feel like a lost soul myself in this pic which might be your point. Probably the point is clear but I am too dense to appreciate it. Please elaborate for me.

You say you've been working on landscapes lately. It might be an opportune time to check out the leaf materials I uploaded to the site and e-mailed you about. These mats will do alot for your landscape scenes I promise.

Simple and complex at one time. Interesting way of creating those souls. I would've never guessed they're bryce trees if you didn't mentioned it. Amazing shape.
Because of the reflecting spheres and the single nail/branch reaching the middle, those souls look like strange clocks frozen in the same time. And even now they look like souls, the white background increases the feeling of emptyness, the feeling of being lost. Yes, that's why I think the title here fits perfectly.

I, too, noticed the spheres look like clocks. very orignal use of trees here, best I've seen since your "The Pit". As it's an abstract, I really don't know how to judge it... but well done nonetheless.

I thought they were clocks!

I had no idea those white spheres were "souls" with shadows cast upon them. I really thought they were clocks. The shadows casted upon the spheres seem to take on the curved contour of the sphere, which makes them look as though they are time markings. I think the image might be more clear for people like me if the souls somehow looked less like clocks.

The clock ticks for everyone. When the fingers are all up, the guy who speaks in capital letters pays you a visit. And life for a soul is eternal (so they say), the clock doesn't move on anymore. The white environment could as well go as a bright mist. In the thick mist, you get lost, even more so if it is blindingly bright as here. I think this picture is not just a nice curiosity, it is in fact very deep, no matter what David thought when he did it.
