Sunset in the Mountains
Sunset in the Mountains

Sunset in the Mountains
Description: Hardly an artistic triumph, but a good learning experience. Messed around quite a bit with the DTE (it sure is deep) and spent some time on the atmosphere. Contrast and Hue in photoshop. Tell me if I overdid the post, I'm working on a screen that's as dark as they get.

Simply great. Your sunsets are spectacular. The atmospheric choices you made have proven to be most wise. Very cinematic cropping. Nice periferal viewpoints. The mountain terrain itself is extremely well modeled. It seems totally natural with a very convincing combination of peaks and rounded elements for that "old and eroded" feel. The material you applied to the mountain is very natural but it is hard to be clear what type of landscape it actually is. Is it vegetation or is it rock? The hue and contrast enhacements may be causing the vegetation to look a bit like rock. Contrast enhancements usually work to clear away haze effects, polarizing colors from hazy gray to more extreme colors. For me your post work is appropriate. This piece has a nice sense of a "burn" effect. 5/5 no doubt.
Maybe you could consider just for fun some heftier low altitude clouds to go along with those high altitude ones. It could be a chance to add another layer of specificity to the image for a contrast.

Now this is an extremely good ground texture. I very much like the effect of just slightly showing the bump on the rock where the light is reflected. The position of the camera is bringing much to the viewer's fiel of height and depth. Messing with the DTE paid off quite well I can tell. I see you worked on the sky too, but it's obvious that most of your attention went on the terrain. You can still reshape the sky to look more dramatic and expressive so it will complete the greatness your image is impetuously going to.

Now that I'm on a different screen, I can see that the contrast blew out my highlights (they were originaly rather slight). The green bits are indeed grass, though I must admit it does look rather flat. I'll also look into some volumetric clouds on this one, something I've been long avoiding because of the render time. However I find sunsets tend to be rather romanticized, they rarely look as good as you want them to- even in reality. Looks like I'll be reworking this one.

I like the form of the landscape very much. I'm not at all sure about the material applied to it, though. I can't share the enthusiasm of radash and richter here. Lighting, however, is superb with almost a hint of light rays. The blue has a bit o a pink hue in it that I do not fully appreciate.

The lighting is exceptional here, the terrain shape is good, the material is good, but I'm not sure about the gossy are in the foreground. It needs something there, but I'm not sure that the glossyness is perfect for the job. Good work.
