Desert Rock
Description: A sequel of sorts to my "Desert Ice" image. Just messing around with volumetric atmospheres. The render time doesn't increase by too much if you set the quality low enough.

The sky is very very good. The sky is not very detailed, but it doesn't look flat, which is the most important thing. The material you've chosen for the rock formations is a curous one for me. I am not sure exactly what type of material that is supposed to be, so shiny even in drier places. The wave bump pattern for the water plane is very convincing. I feel like we are at the mouth of a waterfall, as the water plane and ground plane seem to disappear abruptly along the horizon.

Very TerraGen-like! This is meant as a compliment. The material on the rocks - though strange - is very nice and absolutely fits the scene. Though barren, there seems to be some life as low vegetation - mushrooms? lichen? This could be on an alien planet, too much water for Mars, but about what was generally thought Mars could look like 50 years or so ago.

The rock material is meant to represent wet rock. I suppose I overdid it a little, as the rock seems to be wet in places that would usually be considered high and dry. I think we are just on a river, and the disappearence of the water (and all the land) on the horizon is due to the strength of the haze and the density of the volume atmosphere.

Terragen! Well, I don't think I've done it yet, The material is fairly far removed from Terragen and the atmosphere (especially the clouds) are not quite that quality. Yes, there appears to be vegetation, but it looks very primal to me. Mars 50 years ago? I think someone would have noticed that.

Mars

What I meant was: What we thought 50 years ago Mars could look like - not how Mars looked like 50 years ago. Sorry for the confusion.

Nice rock formations! Is there a postwork? If not I'm quite impressed of the achieved result, though the near peak on the right is a bit too sharp. Now if this is an alien world I'd have no qualms about it. As Rashad noticed, convincing water surface. The rocks do look wet, but perhaps you could still increase the complexity of the texture applied. Those shiny dark-yellow spots makes me think there's a golden ore ahead. And the sky is definatelly a hit, the volumetric atmo did its job. Overall - very good.

Yes, there is postwork, some radical gamma in Photoshop. The sharpness of that peak is because the tip is white- on a white background, making it disappear. The volumetric atmosphere quality settings don't seem to do much- just set it as low as you think will work and enjoy the lack of render time!
