TREE LAB leaf template 2
Description: A photograph based version of the original. This preset almost serves as two tutorials in one. Importing real photographs adds tons of realism to your materials if you know how to manipulate photographs in Bryce. Notice also the glow of passing light. The preserved glow is the second and more profound tutorial here.
When you create a default tree and add this material to the default leaf, you may need to adjust the image position along the Y axis by 5 units. Edit the leaf in "actual selection" mode to make sure the photo fits your leaf. Test this material out as you continue to closely observe real plant life. Trust the settings that I have provided for you before making tons of changes of your own, as this looks easy, but it is not. This trick is very tricky indeed. Some of the settings I have provided might seem arbitrary, but the materials have been tempered and balanced for maximum flexibility and believability. Enjoy

Very very good work, my friend! I've just tested the two leaf mats on every plant object I have and got truly amazed. And I didn't even needed to correct the Y axis at all. The bump option of "TREE LAB leaf template 2" is what really hits the spot. Everything becomes much more realistic. Thanks, Rashad!

there's a small catch...

Thank you for downloading the technique, Richter. I'm glad that you see value in the work I put into this. The only problem I should warn you about with this photo based material is that it does not work well in the "user" leaf option. The assorted leaf SHAPES are provided by an outside program. It has a predetermined leaf shape for the user leaf based upon the original bryce image, even if you change the user leaf image to an image of your own choice. If you want to assign your own leaf SHAPE, you have to go into blend transparency mode to do it. In blend transparency mode you have the leaf shaped as you want it, but you wll lose all of the translucent glow qualities of this technique. This particular technique is built on "Black Nothing" as the transparency channel. Images placed in the transparency channel give other effects, but not the glow of passing light, as there is no refraction response. I hope someone will find a way around it, but I doubt it is possible as I've found no way around it yet in about a year of testing.
