Description: TITLE: 3 Seconds

REMARK: ...later we've found that "man overboard" - but it was only empty beer can...

TECHNICALS: for this picture I've checked 4 methods of making rain react with volumetric light:
1-created starfield (Starbits), blurred it (GIMP), and applied as alpha image (interesting effect, but light makes

elipse on the plane)
2-as above but applied as symmetrical lattice (scrapped - looks ugly)
3- created volumetric material "rain" (scrapped - volumetric light doesn't work inside volumetric material)
4- created one droplet as alpha image, multireplicated several thousand times and spreaded between camera and the

ship (method used in this image)

The ship can be found via:

I haven't posted the platform - it's not so useful and it's much bigger file. If anyone needs something like this,

just let me know.

amazing work

Simply amazing work. Bravo. Excellent combination of forces to create realism. Your model looks amazing under these weather conditions. The technique you used to create the rain was most effective. The rain is INCREDIBLE. The volume material, raindrops, and light sources all work together very convincingly to create the sense of depth and true atmosphere. The only thing I will comment on is the water. The color is great but it looks thicker than water to me. Another powerful entry from the Vue users. 5/5

The rig and the weather around it are beautiful. Thanks for sharing your method of creating the rain, something not very simple. My qualms are with the boat and the water. While the rig seems battered by the storm, the boat is too clear. For the water, it looks to me like 2 different water plains: foreground and background separated by a distinctive border. However, I have no problem with the "leaden solidnesss" look of it. Heavy waters can look like this.

The rain was done very well and inventively, though if you happen to be using Vue 4 Pro there's a way to get our first method of rain working. select your searchlight(s) and go to the shadow menu (fourth down in the light menu at the right). Go to the third tab (influence) and hit the "effect all objects except objects marked below" and mark the alpha plane in the little window below. You can then make another smaller alpha plane of rain, do the same thing, but set this one to a high luminosity in the materials editor and position it where you want the rain to be affected. Mind, though, this only works in Vue 4 Pro or Vue 5 Infinite- and it's probably a lot clumsier than the current method.

The waves are exellent. Could you share how you did them? The terrains in Vue are not really suited for making waves.

third attempt (of posting)

Well, Making of the sea is a material for a small book.. Indeed after spending several hours with terrain editor I gave up and made waves in Bryce (2048*2048 Mordor), and exported to Vue (as .dem file). In this image i've used 4 water elements: foreground (terrain), medium (vast, but flat terrain), distant (infinite plane), and ship's wake/dead water, (Polygon mesh modelled in wings), except the last one there's no chance to see any border - I don't see them even if I know where they are..:) - to obtain this effect I stack them vertically one above another: foreground above medium, both above distant -in fair weather (without fog and haze) I can (barely) see small change in colour - the terrains blend pretty well (see WIP Viking). Unfortunately I haven't found the method to make a good foam (yet- i'm working on it)

Very nice

Yes it is true water and waves and splash is a trick done using terrains with water mats and then maybe some added models created to look like splashes. I have tried it and gave up. I really like the sea and the waves and the rain. It took some time to put this altogether.

It could be a trick of the eye but the spot light makes it look like fog but then the front of the boat looks very clear aside from the rain.
