A beautiful place. It almost reminds me of the monestaries in the Meteor reigon of Thessaly. The detail is excellent, and the trees are quite realistic. My only suggestion is to put a more varied rock material on the fortress.

nice execution

Your quality of work is why you are without a doubt one of my Bryce idols. Nice use of a volumetric cloud and nice use of vegetation. Lots of detail once again. Do you tend to sharpen your images in a 2d app before you post them online? The sharpness seems greater in many of your images (especially the well lit ones) than in a typical Bryce render. The added sharpness is a matter of taste. It would look like a photograph, but the ambient expression of the volume cloud makes it difficult to appreciate the direction of the light source for the scene. Ambient is necessary with volumetric clouds or they will turn black, but maybe a little less, as the cloud should have at least a little bit of internal shadows caused by it's variations in density like a cloud in the sky. Now the cloud glows without enough stimulus and looks a little bit flat compared to the 3d depth of the architechture and vegetation. 50% ambient instead of 100% maybe. From the fortress's shadows I can tell that the sun is right above us at 12 noon, I can also tell the sun itself is not bright enough to justify the glow of the cloud. Minor quibbles.

Very nice picture. Very good colour variations on the vegetation. The birds are a nice touch. If that cloud is seen as rising fog from the lower lying vegatation after rain, it can look that bright. The view through it at the right suggests tere is another - higher - mountain with rich vegetation rising behind the fortress. This setup invites itself for a more sinister place when light is less ample and the fortress nearer by.

I agree woth Horo mostly

Indeed the image is terrific as it is. But you must admit that there is still something about it that keeps it from looking like an actual photograph. When I look at any image the first thing I look for is the lighting arrangement. LIGHTING MUST MAKE SENSE. Real photographs are CONSISTENT. There is no ambient button in real life to help viewers see every pixel. I was confused by the direction of the light source of the scene due to the cloud, which made me think of it's ambient. Tonkin may not even care as he may deliberately want it NOT to look like a photo. I don't mean to insult anyone with my regular comments about ambient expression, but it is something that I give alot of consideration in my own work, so I tend to notice it in other's works. Just because we have become "accostumed" to certain amounts of ambient in digital art, it doesn't mean it actually looks realistic. Simply lowering the ambient of the cloud is my suggestion, as the image is so close to convincing me it is a photo. I have huge amounts of respect for Tonkin and I even was attempting to immitate him with the complexity I added to IndoorOutdoor fusion Confusion. That image is a personal nod of dedication to Tonkin and his way of trully creating a WORLD. Bryce has elements about it that "give it away" as a program. Ambient is one of them. Just like Horo, I am curious what this image may look like if lit differently and more sinisterly

let's shine some lite on this

okay, lets start by saying thank you so much to rashadcarter1 ,for all the nice things he has said.artists need this every once and awhile.as for the liting, you were pretty much right on, the main liting was 12:00, with a small radial lite at 12:00 to enhance the clouds and to enrich the foliage colors. by doing this the volumetric mode is not used, hence, saving hours of render time. now , someone mentioned a more sinister render, well, been there ,did that, too much detail loss. photo realistic: to me this means get close, but not so close that it actually looks like a photo.once again thank you for your comments , they really are appreciated.
