Ringworld Concept 2
Ringworld Concept 2

Ringworld Concept 2
Description: Ok. I've decided to model a Ringworld according to Niven's specs. This one is built precisely to scale except for the shadow squares for which I have no dimensional data. This is a distance shot and I hope it gives the full impression of the Ringworld's awesome size. I've given the dark areas a tiny bit of ambience so they can be barely seen and you'll notice how the sun's glow silhouettes the shadow squares.

This is a first rendering and is pending detailing. Future renderings will offer views at different angles and positions. I'm going to try to create an area of detailed terrain on the inner surface.

I'm interested in all comments and suggestions.

Specs:

RingWorld:
Diameter: 190,000,000 miles
Width: 997,000 miles
Rim Wall Height: 1,000 miles (cannot be seen from this distance)
Circumference: 597,000,000 miles
Mass: 2x10exp24 metric tons
Surface Area: 6x10exp14 square miles (approx. 3,000,000 times the surface area of Earth)
Rotational Velocity: 770 miles/second
Surface Gravity (Centrifugal): .992 G
1 Ringworld Day: 30 hours
One Full Rotation: 7.5 days
10 Rotations: 75 days (1 Falan)

Shadow Squares:
Orbital Diameter: 45,663,300 miles
Size (Individual Squares): 3,502,000 square miles
No. of Squares: 20

Star: G3 verging on G2 (barely smaller and cooler than Sol)

Specs on the Shadow Squares are my best approximation and are incomplete. I haven't seen any info on their actual specs in the books yet. If anyone has this info please post it in a comment. Thanks.

Whoa man! At first I thought there'll be no room for a comment here :)) A lot of info you wrote there (I'm not a scientist so I will have to trust the above). What about the picture: The consept itself is worth to complete. But the img seems too default, which doesn't mean I don't like it. For it is still a WIP I can only recommend you using David's tutorial (#7 on is website) named "~Coloured
Halos around Stars". Cool results await. Keep up!

I like the ringworld idea, and you've done well to translate this into an image, my main quibble with the concept is that the materials he proposed belonged more to fighting fantasy than SF - for example, the stuff the ring was made from would have to have unbelieveable tensile strength to hold together (think of that 1G acting outwards all around the circumfrence) - some kind of magic inbuded mithril perhaps and the shadow wires - inpossibly sharp due to their fineness but also, have great inertia since they cut rather than get brushed out of the way. All weird stuff. Interesting but superseeded in it's strange facination by Phillip Jose Farmers riverworld series I feel. To get the star haze I think you would need a wider angle on your camera and that could muck up the rest of your image. You could combine two renders, the ring object masked onto a wider angle view of the stars - that would work.
