Search and Rescue
Description: I was in two minds as to where this should go, strictly speaking I suppose it is a landscape, but somehow the helicopter (which is a DAZ model) became the subject even though it was added more or less as an afterthought. The sceene rendered in Bryce5.5 consists of a water plane and three terrains, the central terrain is spikey to simulate trees, the one beyond that is the hills and the furthest is mountains. Lighting consists of an additional sun (see mine and Horo's tuts on our webpages) and twenty very weak point lights (non fading charcole grey intensity one) scattered around the vacinity of the terrains to give some ambient lighting. The bulk of the time was spent getting the terrains the right shape and finding out how to set object specific AA to off for the "wooded" terrains - Bsolutions http://www.bsmooth.de/BSolutions/ is where the answer to this was found the AA was wrecking the effect but I still wanted AA for the water. Postproduciton involved filtered distance masking in Corel Photo paint, I processed the distance mask in PSP7 to create a helicopter only mask and a true distance mask (although I could have used object masking to get the helicopter version, I was in PSP7 so I did it there) and then applied two soft blurs one to distance and one to evething behind the heicopter - finally I gamma compressed the image in PSP7. And finally finally, I resized the image from 800x600 to 800x500 to give it that slightly squashed aspect ratio that I assocaite with seing things on the big screen - just because I thought it looked cinematic. Altogether took about three hours including render which was about three quaters of an hour.

a whole lotta work, but it definately pays off

Amazing job david, it definately looks cinematic to me--even makes me think of Jurassic Park, hehe.

However, I do have a big suggestion. The one thing throwing off this scene, in my opinion, is the helicopter. Its size and the camera angle youve given sorta gives the impression of a toy helicopter. I would suggest that you greatly increase the scale of the copter so that it takes up the lower left hand side of the image and gives the impression that the camera is following side by side with it. Ooooo, and maybe manually add some motion blur to the top of the helicopter to make it feel like the propeller is spinning.

Great freakin job though, the mountains, textures, and misty look youve put into this scene wins a 5/5 from me.

Great work, no doubt about it. The swing of the scene is beautiful. I have quibbles here with the distance blur, the fotographer set his camera wrong. I would expect a crisp clear picture up to infinity. I also have a scale problem. The foreground terrain doesn't look like forrested or even bushy and it continues right to the water. The form of the terrain, however, is very nice. The colour of the water has a a generous amount of cyan and I would associate that rather with a glacier lake. However, the vegetation does change the colour of the water and I don't know, what kind of it swimms within. I have the impression, this is a setup like for a model railway and if viewed in that way, the distance blur makes it even more plausible. Funny, the choppers size seems right to me.

Aye, these scale issues plague me! I keep experimenting with it but rarely does DOF work unless applied to something small, motion blurr was indeed an option but it totall wrecked the details on the hills... so I shied away from that. Think what I'll do is upload the Swamp and Jungle terrain and see if anyone else is prepaird to take up the gauntlet - Horo?
