Big Sur Terragen Style
Big Sur Terragen Style

Big Sur Terragen Style
Description: The Big Sur model from the libruary, an old mat and a basic mirror like water plane. The bulk of my time, about two hours - possibly three, was spent in the sky lab trying, mostly unsucessfully, to recreate the wonderful terragen lighting evident in Horo's Illhorn Morgen image. Just couldn't get the sky quite that shade of blue and have all the effect I wanted. Nor are the clouds as satisfactory. I did spice things up a bit with lens flair - for which I am prepaired to be critised and finally deepened the shadows with gamma compression. But well, try as I might, it's not got that crispness to it that I was hoping for. Now you may wonder why go to the effort of trying to make terragen like images in bryce? Erm... good point. I like the challange and besides, bryce allows so much more, just needs that "edge" to the lighting to make the landscapes really convincing. Oh well, see what you think. The lens flair was added in Photoshop and the gamma compression in PSP7.

Great!

The Frozencry-esque lensflare is very nice. Sky lab is my biggest trouble in bryce, can never get it to do what I want. You, however, have been able to turn this into a Terragen-like scene rather well. Ambient light is not very good, though it does resemble fairly exactly some of my Terragen accidents. Well done, but I'd leave Terragen to be Terragen and Bryce to be Bryce.

Er... risking to get beaten up badly, I say this would have come out better if done in your usual fashion. I remember LitoNico having put on quite a few TerraGen-like skies made in Bryce about a year ago that didn't got the attention due. Though the lens flare gives it an artistic edge, it spoils the ambient light. Like LitiNico, I struggle most with the Skylab and when I have good clouds, they look flat. I've never thought to trigger off such a discussion by uploading that old picture. Nevertheless, yours is a great piece of work and even the mat on the mountains looks TerraGen-like.

David...I'm impressed... and back. So much to do and not enough time to spent on it.

"a basic mirror like water plane"?... Let me ask you a Q. Is this the secret of your astounding water surfaces? Whenever you post a pic here (and if there's a water) it always looks so much great. How you come up with so real water? Please, would you answer this for me :) "Big Sur Terragen Style" is a perfect match, no doubt. I like it very much...and your Lens Flare is good (although you could try the others available) -=only a suggestion=- Keep postin' - I'm anxious to see the next one!

Most of my water surfaces are black mirrors and not acutally tranparent at all. This speeds up the render time and relieves me of the need to do any "underwater" bits. I use a combination of voroni and waves mostly, anything that give a nice broken and not too obviously uniform pattern - so between 3 and 5 octives. I got the idea from terragen for the water, since I noticed that in that it was mostly reflective and I recognised the fractal pattern they were using being a close relative to mordor I figured I'd copy their idea since it seemed to work so well.
