Cave Troll
Description: Bryce5.5, troll model from DAZ. Please refer to the "GT40 cave painting" image for more information on the lengthy and frankly fiddly "technique" used to generate this "effect". Still don't know what I'm doing with this style, I'm just wating for something to suggest itself...

This figures. I'm reading The Lord Of The Rings and you post this. LOL

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is an exaple of a photograph scupted landscape renderred while looking straight dowm at it, right? Or is it a 3D model half buried in a cave wall? Interesting material and lighting. Judging from this Troll's stoney complexion I guess he's been getting too much sunlight lately, eh? ;-)

Here's a challenge. Try renderring Treebeard the Ent. I'd take a shot at it but I've been fighting a cold for almost a week now and I can't concentrate. :-(

Interesting technique as mentioned before. The coal outline is an interesting effect. It still does not remind me of cave paintings, which doesn't mean I wouldn't appreciate lighting and the whole setup. As for its use -- well, ever thought of going into advertising? It is certainly a very eye catching kind of technique and unique, besides.

Horo writes - ever thought of going into advertising?

Where have I heard that before.......oh yes. Now I remember.

<clip>
Foreman - Mr. Dent, the plans and work orders for this bypass have been on display at the local planning dept. for the past nine months. You were more than welcome to lodge any formal protests at the appropriate time.

Arthor - Of course as soon as I heard about them I went right down to see them. You'd hadn't gone out of your way to call attention to them, like telling anybody or anything.

Foreman - But the plans were on display.

Arthor - I eventually had to go down to the cellar.

Foreman - That's the Display Dept.

Arthor - With a torch.

Foreman - The light's probably gone.

Arthor - So were the stairs.

Foreman - But the plans were on display.

Arthor - Ho Yes! They were on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck inside a disused lavitory with a sign on the door saying "BEWARE OF THE LEOPARD!" Ever thought of going into advertising?

Exactly! English is not my native language, its my third or fourth, depending on how I count, so I do make use of clever remarks heard on radioplays, movies or read in books (and then think I made them up myself). Still, I mean it: it's an interestimg, eye catching and unique mode of doing pictures and that's exactly what's needed in advertising. And yes, the bulldozer most probably rusts first.

I took the troll and rendered it in both distance mask and normal AA, I then filted the mask and used that to create a terrain which I applied the render image to parametrically along with the stone material filted by heigth and rendered that again with lights in the top down 2D view. The black outlines are the steep edges of the terrain creating deep shadow regions. My favourite line from HHG belongs to Marvin when he falls down the pit on the Mysterious planet of Brontitor (you know where the huge stature of Arthur is situatted?) anyhow, Marvin asks, "Does it really matter? And if it does... does it really matter that it matters?"
