TIR settings
Description: A reminder for me as much as anyone. Turn on the TIR! The gun was a free model for DAZ's site. I wanted to give it the appearance of a water pistol. So I did a test render with a green glass like material and got the top image - and then, when I reolised that I had forgotten to set the TIR on, I did it again and got the bottom image. Judge for yourselves which you think is better. Note that the lower image took about six hours less time to render just by activating the TIR - that's got to be worth considering if nothing else.

TIR?

What's that TIR you speak of? The only difference I can notice is the reflection of the gun...Is that it?

And I think the first one looks better in terms of realistic water gun. However the second one looks appealing(did I spelled this right?) too but in terms of a collection item(you know...having one along with a bunch of others like it).

TIR, is a setting in which.......

Ok In your render options ( to the lower right of the main render button, Looks liek a downards facing triangle. ) click that Go into render options you will see a setting titled TIR if you click that It makes Glassy Opjects or any object that Is transparent BTW TIR stands for -Total Internal Reflection- ok anyways TIR Kinda Micro Mages light Deterring how the bounce Of or in a object such as water, diamonds, gems, glass ect and will greatly reduce render time as david already said with TIR checked and IMO it looks better only took 6 less hours than without TIR checked, So really just keep it checked if you want lower render times it will help em out greatly :)

Tir

Looks better with the TIR! Are you sure you said it right, I think Jesuis is right, it takes 6 hours LONGER with TIR ON then without it? Is that correct?

Awesome work!

Render times

Setting the TIR wil reduce render times in scenes with transparent materials in it because the render depth for TIR is (in default setting) lower than the standard render depth. It all depends on what effect you are looking for - however if you are not too fussy then set TIR and take advantage of the lower render times.

TIR

To what value do you set TIR? Default is 2, which I think may be a bit narrow. It says, essentially, how many time a ray of light is reflected inside an object (like a prism, for ex.) Don't forget, you also have to set and adjust the Max. Ray Depth. Default 6 is adequate for most projects, but if you have reflecting objects facing themselfs, you might to have to increase it beyond 100. In this case, you could call it TER (total external reflections). While fully appreciating the savings in render time, I like the top water pistol better. Try to use TIR, but with a higher setting than 2.

great I will have to look it to this... The gun on the top looks more realistic. It has a more plastic look to it. I hate to play with a glass water gun.
