Electron World
Description: Gone for that under the electron microscope look, the Bee makes a reappeance. The effect is attained by using a highly refliective and tranparent material with a high refractive index (object specific antiailsing disabled to give grainy surface) and multiple lightsources close to being behind the objects with respect to the camera to give the highly speculative outline effect. Tricky effect that I've been after for a while. Not the nicest of images I admit - oh and I know electron miscroscope images are normally monochrome but sometimes they get artifically coloured - this is one of those instances. That's my excuse. No post work or gamma correction. All bryce except for the bee which was from Daz3d and inported through poser5. Guess what, my internet connection is working today and I've uploaded two images - wow! You watch, to make up for it - it will refuse to connect at all tomorrow.

If we negected the size of the bee (which should be bigger but I'm just a nitpicker because you've dabbed into my profession somewhat), this is very convincive. As for the colours - not all microscopic images are monochormatic and their colour doesn't need to be fake. If you look at coloured sample, it'll remain coloured unred the microscope too (e.g. moulds, slices of leaves, etc). Very very cool!

No, no you are right about the bee. I knew it should be bigger but the model, although detailed, wasn't really suitable for the uber closeup I had in mind when I came up with the idea. When you say not all microscopic images are monochromatic does this include electron miscroscopic images because I was under the impression that they were only coloured post production. I have used electon microscope images for greyscale height map terrains before now but it is tricky to get maps of sufficent definition satisfactory for a large image. Just a thought.

Yes, as far as I know, all electron microscope images are grayscale because of the ay they're made (bunch of electrons hitting your sample and result being visualised on photographic film to sum it up). I say "as far as I know" because my lab only has light microsope so maybe the everadvancing technology got further? I was referring ti light microsope images which usually are very nicely coloured ( sometimes usage of dies is neccessary to see certain cell particles or make a distinction between various bacteria).

As for sufficient definition - no luck there as for the purpose of vicualising micro world sicentists don't need images as big as you'd like them to be for bryce though again, who knows? Maybe in the future.

To add to the confusion, I thought the subject under an electron microscope needs to be covered by an unltra-thin layer of gold in order to get the electrons to be amplified. It works entirely different than an optical microscope.

Ignoring tech talk, colour, size of bee and such: this looks impressingly real. The ground is just amazing! To make the abdomen, or everything behind the head, out of focus could possibly improve the plausibility even more.
